What are the health benefits of the sun?
There are many healing benefits of sunshine, we all need Vitamin D.
Sunlight, not only does it keep us sane, makes us happy and provides a nice glow to our skin but it also has so many other benefits. The only way we can produce vitamin D is via sunlight. The UVB irradiation from the sun creates vitamin D in the skin known as cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) and is only made in the skin, which then gets transported via the blood to act on the bones, gut and kidneys, naturally vitamin D can be found in cod liver oil, fatty fish, butter and animal liver. Therefore vegans that don’t eat fish or dairy products are at risk of sub clinical vitamin D deficiency. It plays a role in maintaining cellular calcium concentration, helps with some cancers, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis and diabetes.
Every cell and tissue needs vitamin D for its well being, the skin produces it with 15 minutes of sunlight per day, it helps with:
- Heart health
- Cell formation and longevity
- Skin health
- Pancreatic health
- Aging process
- Sleep patterns
- Reproductive health
- Athletic performance
- Eye health
- Immune health
- Moods and feelings
- Weight management
- Digestion and absorption of food
- Healthy bones
Melanin within the skin absorbs UV light, therefore, darker skinned people produce less vitamin D as they are meant to have a lot of sun on their skin, and older people also make less vitamin D. You can get your vitamin D by direct sunlight or by using a tanning bed that utilises UVB rays, make sure it uses these rays as some don’t and are harmful to your health. You can also take vitamin D supplements. 85% of people are deficient in vitamin D, your car home and office windows block out any UVB rays, industrial areas with a high-sulphur air pollution blocks the suns rays, if you are overweight or pregnant you can have higher needs for vitamin D. When we put on sunscreen we are preventing the UVB rays and are therefore stopping the formation of vitamin D something that is essential to our body, my advice is to cover up in the middle of the day when the sun is at its peak but where you can, get in that natural sunlight, it's so good for you! During the winter months, it could be necessary to supplement with vitamin D.

When thinking about eating the right food you often forget that what you store your food in is just as important. Plastics leach phthalates into your food and these days’ plastics are wrapped around your food and soft plastics are used to store nearly all of our food.
