Salt, also known as sodium, is an electrolyte. Salt is a mineral that you need in your body. Electrolytes are minerals that dissolve in water and carry an electrical charge. Pure water does not conduct electricity, but water-containing salt does.
The three main electrolytes are sodium, potassium and chloride, others that are in small amounts are known as trace minerals are magnesium, calcium, zinc and many others. These are electrically charged so they can carry nutrients into and out of your cells carry messages along your nerves and help control your heart beat. Your body is made mostly of water therefore these minerals can be found everywhere. They can carry other nutrients with them into your cells and carry waste products and excess water out of your cells.
In order for your body to be healthy there needs to be a lot of potassium inside and a lot of sodium in the fluid outside, they constantly move back and forth through the cell membrane to keep the balance. The correct balance is three parts potassium and one part sodium. If there is an oversupply of sodium the body excretes it via the kidneys, if the kidneys become overloaded and can’t secrete it then it causes the vascular system to constrict and the body increases the fluid to dilute the sodium, causing fluid retention. The body needs 500 milligrams per day to maintain its function, which includes normal fluid levels, healthy muscle function, stomach and nerve function and proper acidity of the blood. Too much can cause fluid retention (edema), hypertension, liver and kidney disease, potassium deficiency, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

You can lose salt when you sweat a lot due to exercise or hot weather, this can be replenished by electrolytes. Diarrhoea or vomiting can also cause you to quickly lose electrolytes. Having too much salt can also deplete the calcium from your bones. If you crave salt you might be suffering from adrenal fatigue or live a fast paced stressful life. The best type of salt is Himalayan, which provides a variety of minerals. Avoid processed foods as they contain a high level of salt. Eat a balance of potassium and sodium; you can get potassium from fruits.
