What is the cosmetic industry costing us? In the United States, the cosmetic industry makes approximately $50 billion per year, hardly surprising when they are making so much money that the government still ok’s known toxins with in their products. However what else is this industry costing us, the consumer?
Many people are careful about what they put in their mouth and forget about what they are putting on their skin, did you know that what you put on your skin can actually be worse than what you put in your mouth, the skin has no real defence system what you put on it is what stays and gets absorbed into the body, however when we eat something the saliva in our mouth and the digestive enzymes in the stomach break down some of the toxins before they get released into the body. So why don’t we think about what we put on our skin? The governments don’t have mandatory testing of these products before they are sold and the labelling of organic isn’t as stringent as with cosmetics as it is with food, they can call themselves organic if only one product in it is organic.Within your cosmetics there is a vast number of toxicities: in 2007 a survey done by the EWG (Environmental Working Group) tested 20 teenage girls across the united states found 16 different chemicals in these girls blood that had hormone disrupting properties from cosmetics. The four most common ones were phthalates, musks, parabens, and triclosan. The most concern of this is the decrease in fertility and in the age of young girls going through puberty which can then disrupt the hormonal system and causes an earlier age onset of menopause. Parabens cause breast and testicular cancer because they disrupt your body’s endocrine (hormonal) system as it mimics oestrogen, as stated in a study done in 1998 of rats, it is a preservative found in numerous cosmetics such as moisturisers, mascara, lipstick, shampoo and deodorant. Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) (also known as sodium laureth sulphate SLES) is a carcinogen when combined with other chemicals and becomes a nitrosamine, it can also irritate eyes and skin, they penetrate the skin and break down the moisture barrier and therefore cause dry skin, premature aging and allow other chemicals to enter the skin, it is found in shampoo and lipstick.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) estimates that one out of five cosmetics might be contaminated with a cancer-causing agent. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health reported that nearly 900 chemicals are toxic. The toxins within your products make their way into your body and become stuck there as we don’t have the resources to break it down. We are having toxic overload and you don’t even know it because a lot of the time the symptoms start occurring years later. Many people say that buying organic is expensive and they can’t afford it but let me ask you this, can you afford not to?

When thinking about eating the right food you often forget that what you store your food in is just as important. Plastics leach phthalates into your food and these days’ plastics are wrapped around your food and soft plastics are used to store nearly all of our food.
