When thinking about eating the right food you often forget that what you store your food in is just as important.
Plastics leach phthalates into your food and these days’ plastics are wrapped around your food and soft plastics are used to store nearly all of our food. The three main chemicals in your plastics are:
Bisphenol A is found in linings of canned foods, soda cans, plastic gallon milk bottles, baby teething rings, baby bottles and sippy cups. It disrupts the endocrine system, if in contact in early life to can lead to chromosomal defects and can cause spontaneous miscarriages and genetic damage. Bisphenol-A (BPA) found in plastics has been known to cause breast cancer, it is an oestrogen mimicking chemical that is linked to cancer and damaged sexual development. Over the years scientists have detected BPA in breast milk, serum, saliva, urine, amniotic fluid and cord blood from at least 220 people across Europe, North America and Asia. The EWG feels that the chemical may contribute to ‘the litany of human health problems’ that are increasing in the world, such as breast cancer, diabetes, obesity, infertility and polycystic ovarian syndrome. Even at low doses BPA can cause cancer, insulin resistance (leading to type 2 diabetes) chromosomal damage linked to miscarriage and birth defects including Down’s syndrome. BPA can also be found in polycarbonate plastics such as water bottles, baby bottles, children’s toys, adhesives, electronics and tooth fillings and sealants.
Phthalates make plastics like PVC more flexible and resilient and are the most pervasive endocrine disrupter, it is associated with changes in the development of the male brain, genital defects, metabolic abnormalities and reduced testosterone in babies and adults. They are found in processed food packaging, shower curtains, detergents, beauty products, toys, lubricants and adhesives and vinyl flooring and wall coverings.
Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are found in non-stick cookware, they also mimic and disrupt sex hormones.
Therefore buy your food in glass bottles and it is best to use hard plastics rather than soft plastic, so store your food in hard plastic containers rather than wrapping it in plastic film, the safer label is labelled with a (5), also don’t put any hot food in plastic containers and never heat anything in the plastic container as heat causes the plastic to leach into your food, put cooked food in a ceramic bowl, wait until it is cold and the put plastic film over the top not allowing the plastic film to touch the food. And as always consume fresh, unprocessed foods so you are not buying canned food and plastics, avoid number 7 plastics as they contain BPA however 1,2 and 4 are safer choices as they don’t contain BPA, use glass where possible especially baby bottles or get BPA free such as the medela-brand. Avoid plastic water bottles and especially metal ones as they maybe lined with BPA-containing plastic. Avoid storing food and drink in plastic containers, glass and stainless steel are better safer choices.
Many years ago the onset of early aged puberty was due to contaminated animal feed with fire retardant chemical, polybrominated biphenal (PBB), another study of peuto rican girls in 2002 showed it was linked to phthalates and other plastic chemicals that disrupt the endocrine system and effect hormones which control the development of puberty, these phthalates are found in soft, pliable plastic products. In the 19th century puberty occurred around the age of 15 for girls and 17 for boys now it can be as low as 10 for girls. In the US a report by the Breast Cancer Fund in 2007 say it's now as low as 8 for girls, this also puts them at risk of developing heart disease and breast cancer.
